Show Your Support for Breast Cancer Prevention!

Tell our state leaders to honor their commitment to Ohio women.

Click here to write your officials now!

Did you know that Ohio has the 4th highest breast cancer mortality rate in the United States? Our state needs to close the gap in breast cancer screening and treatment services to improve this alarming statistic.

Last year, Ohio leaders worked to close this gap by providing $5 million in state funding for the Ohio Breast and Cervical Cancer Project (Ohio BCCP) which provides early detection screening to disadvantaged women in our state.

But, due to budget shortfalls, Governor Ted Strickland has proposed cutting nearly 70 percent of the state's funding for the program – putting at risk thousands of women our leaders just recently worked to save.

Don't let that happen! Click here and urge your state legislators to honor their commitment and protect funding for the Ohio Breast and Cervical Cancer Project.

As a dedicated Activist, you know the importance of early detection. When breast and cervical cancer are detected early, patients have more treatment options and a greater rate of survival.

Over 6,700 Ohio mothers, daughters, sisters and loved ones will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and nearly 1,800 of them will lose their battle with the disease. But, when breast cancer is detected early, the 5 year survival rate is 98% and treatment costs are less.

The Ohio BCCP program provides free mammograms, clinical breast exams, and pap tests for under-insured and un-insured Ohio women, acting as an important safety net to those in need. In these tough economic times, this program is all the more important, as more Ohioans may find themselves out of work and without insurance. That's why it's critical our elected officials hear from us right now!

Please take moment and urge our leaders to restore funding for early detection services for all women in Ohio.

Together we can ensure that Ohio's poor and disadvantaged women are given a fighting chance.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Komen Northeast Ohio Expands to 22 Counties & Grants Record Amount

The Northeast Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure announces record-breaking grant funding of $1.5 million for the 2009-2010 grant year. The competitive grants process culminated in March with the selection of 25 organizations whose programs will deliver lifesaving messages and services to over 32,000 individuals. The grant recipients will be able to serve the comprehensive breast health and treatment support needs of those most likely to die from breast cancer.

Organizations in every Ohio County will now be eligible to apply for grants from the Ohio Komen affiliates to help fund critical education, screening, diagnostic and survivorship support services.  By including these counties in their service area, Komen Northeast Ohio is able to break down barriers and reach more women in need.  Because all 88 Ohio counties are now served by Komen, the Alliance and the Ohio Affiliates can more effectively advocate for this issue.

About Komen

Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
